Tours not only create togetherness in groups and teams, but also uniting people from all backgrounds and cultures, who would never normally meet.

Well-matched Fixtures
With our exceptional knowledge of the sports environment in South Africa, we will assess the local club and school teams in the area to make sure your competitive tour matches are perfectly matched to ensure games are closely contested.

There is no better way to build togetherness in a team than taking on the challenge of competing against new opposition in a completely new environment.

Community Coaching Projects
A tour to South Africa would not be complete without helping out on a community project in one of the many deprived township communities. As part of your sports tour your group or team will have the opportunity to coach, teach and mentor children and young adults from the local township areas. Expect lots of singing and dancing from the kids as they show their gratitude for your time and efforts.

Unbeatable Cultural Experiences
A key element of a successful tour is not only to experience sport in a new light, but to also bond as a team by experiencing a new culture. Example Itinerary
This itinerary is an example to show you some of the activities that are possible. Please contact a member of the Sporting Opportunities team to tailor a tour to your specifications.

Day 1
Arrive in Port Elizabeth, where you will be met by a member of our team at the airport. Your group will then be taken back to the accommodation where you will receive an induction with a detailed itinerary of cultural activities and more information about the community projects and competitive matches. In the evening your group will be treated to a traditional welcome Braai (BBQ).

Day 2
Your group will start the day with a guided tour of Port Elizabeth including the local township communities where your community projects will take place. Here your group will be able to meet the friendly local township kids. The afternoon will see your group travelling to the Kragga Kamma Game Reserve for a 3–4 hour safari tour, soaking up all things wild.

Day 3
Day 3 is your first day on your community coaching project in the township, where your group will coach their chosen sport(s) to enthusiastic township kids from 09:00 – 16:00. The evening will be a social evening in the accommodation where games and activities will be arranged for your group.

Day 4
During the morning the group can be taken for team training and a fitness session in build up for your first competitive match in the evening. The afternoon will be similar to day 3 where we will get you out working again on the community sports coaching projects in the township. Early evening will be your first chance to show off your skills against the locals in a match that will see you stretched and challenged in your chosen sport. However competitive these games are you will still get a great deal of fun from them and make new friends in the process.

Day 5
The morning will include a trip to Seaview Lion Park, known for their rare breed of White Lions, where getting up close to the wildlife is a must. For those more brave and adventurous types, the group will have a chance to hold a lion cub and learn important messages about local habitats and nature conservation. The afternoon will include a trip to a Port Elizabeth beach (some of the best in South Africa) and the Boardwalk Shopping and Entertainment Centre where you will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

Day 6
Much like Day 4 your team will start their day with an early morning fitness session in preparation for an evening match against a local team where you can run through drills and tactics for the game ahead. Late morning and afternoon you will be taken back out to the townships to continue having fun sports coaching sessions with the kids before your evening match.

Day 7
Continuing the positive work you have been doing in the townships we will take you back out to run more fun coaching sessions with the kids. Additional work might be in helping prepare up-and-coming matches or developing new sports facilities for the kids to enjoy. Previous groups have built and painted a new sports gym from a shipping container or run a sports day for kids from all over the area to attend where important health and educational messages can be taught. This session will be from 09:00 to 16:00. After a tiring day you will head back to the accommodation for a Braai (BBQ) and various games and activities arranged for the group.

Day 8
Free Day – This could be used to explore some of Port Elizabeth’s attractions, such as the Red Location museum to learn more about South Africa’s rich history and the harsh conditions many South African's lived through during the apartheid years. You could also take a trip to the shops to pick up some souvenirs for family and friends back home. The evening will be a social evening in the accommodation where games and activities will be arranged for your group.

Day 9
In the morning your group will be taken to one of Port Elizabeth’s local markets, to pick up any souvenirs and bargains that you were not able to do on Day 8. The afternoon will include a trip to McArthur Baths, where your group will be able to relax in the top swimming pool complex.

Day 10
Ready for your third competitive match your group will be taken on a fitness and team training session in the morning before an afternoon on your community projects in the townships. Smiling faces will great you as you pull up at disadvantaged schools in our fun bus to continue building on the relationships you have with the kids there. The evening will test your sports abilities again as you take on one of the local sports clubs for another competitive match.

Day 11
Beach Day – Today your group will travel to Jeffrey’s Bay, the world famous surf beach. There are lots of amazing activities to get involved in, including dune boarding, surf lessons and horse riding.

Day 12
Day 12 will be your last day that you will go out to the townships and run your coaching sessions with the kids so it is bound to be an emotional one. The evening will follow with your fourth and final competitive match so if you want to go out on a high then your team better win this!

Day 13
Your final day of activities will include a day-long cruise down the stunning Sundays River. This is a fantastic opportunity to soak up the natural beauty of South Africa and relax after two weeks of hard and energetic fun. Your final evening will include an outdoor Braai with entertainment provided by traditional African dancers and drumming helping see you off in style.

Day 14
On saying your farewells to our South African team and packing up your newly acquired souvenirs, you will be taken to the airport ready to get your flight home.

Where is South Africa?
The Republic of South Africa lies at the very southern tip of Africa, flanked by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The country is almost five times the size of the UK and shares southern Africa with Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

History of South Africa
South Africa’s turbulent history is a blend of tribal warfare, racial struggle and political activity, the legacy of which lives on in the multicultural country that you see today. The Dutch were the first European settlers to land in South Africa, way back in the 17th century. They brought a new religion (the Dutch Reformed Church) and a new language (Afrikaans) which is still widely spoken throughout South Africa. The British, however, became increasingly prominent during the late 18th century and tensions soon led to the Anglo-Boer War. The conflict saw the Boers (Dutch farmers) and the British forces locked in battle from 1899-1902. The British were victorious and finally took control of the Boer regions of Transvaal and the Orange Free State (OFS) and ruled the country until 1910 when the Union of South Africa was created.

The Union of South Africa installed political power to the whites and, unsurprisingly, extreme racial segregation, better known as apartheid, was soon evident across the country. The Afrikaner National Party was especially renowned for upholding its strict racial regime from 1948 onwards. Blacks established their own political parties in response to this oppression, the most notable being the African National Congress (ANC), and black-led protests were met with unfettered violence. During the 1960s, the leaders of the ANC were imprisoned, including Nelson Mandela, and the country left the Commonwealth declaring itself a republic state. Racial tensions continued for many years and it was only in 1989, when FW de Klerk came to power, that South Africa gained a new hope for peace. In 1990, Nelson Mandela was freed from prison and became the first black president, winning the 1994 general election. Soon afterwards, South Africa returned to the Commonwealth.

South Africa has come a long way since the days of apartheid, but the division between whites and blacks still exists today. Fortunately, as one of the most democratic and well developed nations on the continent, South Africa can now be hopeful about finally resolving its turbulent and racially-loaded past.

Languages of South Africa
There are 11 official languages in South Africa but English is widely spoken, especially in the main cities. If travelling through South Africa, you will undoubtedly come across this variety of language. Afrikaans speakers usually speak English well, but this is not always the case in small towns and amongst the older generations. There are several African languages spoken, of which the most common are Zulu and Xhosa which uses a variety of clicks – hard to learn but will provide a source of intrigue for listeners.

Music in South Africa
Many people are familiar with the African sounds and choral beauty of the Lady Smith Black Mambazo band, most notably for their collaboration with Paul Simon on the Graceland project of 1986, winning fans throughout the world. Their music has also been used on TV commercials such as the Heinz baked beans TV advert in 1999. The Mambazo’s music has a recognizable sound (known as the Iscathamiya style of singing) but there is an array of other South African music which you should try to sample while in country, including Hip Hop, Reggae, Jazz and other contemporary styles.

Food in South Africa
South Africa offers traditional food spanning many different cultures, from Braais (barbeques) and biltong (dried meat), to Potjiekos (cooked meat and vegetable stew) and Mielie Pap (a stiff corn meal mix).

Climate in South Africa
South Africa has an envious climate, with sunny weather being enjoyed throughout the year, although the temperatures in winter tend to be cool and mild. South Africa’s seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere and the winter months are therefore spread from June to August, with temperatures ranging from around 10°C to 20°C. The summer weather blazes from November to March, with temperatures reaching about 30°C, and spring is during September and October, with autumn between April and May.

Travelling in South Africa
South Africa offers a reliable and affordable bus network that makes travelling the country by coach a convenient option. The journey from Cape Town (west coast) to Johannesburg (east coast) takes around 20 hours and there are a number of reputable companies to choose from, including Greyhound and Translux, as well as other hop-on, hop-off services that are targeted at the backpacker market. Travelling by bus is also a great way to explore the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth – a stunning coastal landscape rich with wildlife and flora.

Travelling by train is another affordable option, but often slightly more expensive than bus. Travel times tend to be shorter than bus, but not in every case. For example, the train journey from Cape Town (west coast) to Johannesburg (east coast) can take up to 30 hours as opposed to 20 hours by bus.

Renting a car gives you flexibility and is perhaps the best way to discover the areas of South Africa that the bus and train networks do not service. The roads are well kept and a number of major car rental companies operate in South Africa which makes car rental simple. You must, however, make sure you have a valid driver’s licence and are fully insured to drive in South Africa.

Flying is the most convenient way to travel between South Africa’s most popular areas and cities, including Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg. Booking early will save you money and there are a number of domestic airlines to choose from.

Leisure in South Africa
South Africa is a haven for adventure with extreme sports, varied landscapes and famous surfing destinations, namely Jeffrey's Bay. There are also fantastic golf courses, scenic hiking routes (an ideal way of getting close to the natural environment and also an inexpensive way of exploring the country), places to parachute jump, go mountain biking, scuba dive and much more. You may want to include some of the following activities while in-country: mountain biking, camping, shark diving, bungee jumping, 4x4 safaris, golf, fishing, scuba diving, parachuting, horse riding, dune boarding, boogey boards, deep sea cruises, tennis, squash, kayaking, badminton, water skiing, coastal hiking and power kiting.

Sport in South Africa
South Africa has long been a respected and fearsome force in international sport with its rugby, cricket and football teams providing strong competition around the globe. South Africa is therefore a perfect destination for anyone who has a passion for sport, whether playing it, coaching it or watching it. However, behind South Africa’s sporting success, lies a lack of sporting opportunities for many of the children living in the townships and poorer communities. Therefore, by joining one of our sports coaching volunteer projects, you can give young athletes the opportunity to play and develop in the sports they love. You too can play a variety of sports, at a variety of levels, during your time in South Africa.

Volunteering in South Africa
Developed cities and international sporting success mask a serious lack of funding and opportunities for many of the children and young athletes throughout South Africa. There is a variety of volunteer projects in South Africa that need dedicated volunteers to help with. Your skills and experience can therefore make a huge difference to the disadvantaged children you will volunteer with on our volunteer community projects, especially through sport.

Gap Year in South Africa
South Africa is an ideal location for any gap year volunteer or gap year traveler. A gap year in South Africa could see you working on a gap year volunteer project, enjoying gap year adventures and making friends with the thousands of other gap year travelers who are spending their gap year in South Africa.

You may be wondering where the money you pay towards your tour is actually going. As with any trip overseas, there are many things to consider that incur a cost, all of which are added benefits making the experience as memorable and fulfilling as possible!

It also means you can benefit from the expertise of our preferred partner – STA Travel.

Insurance
We take the safety of our travellers very seriously. You must therefore book adequate travel insurance before you come away with us – you simply won’t be able to participate in your placement, trip or tour if you don’t. Although policies vary, your insurance must include emergency medical expenses, personal accident cover, and repatriation. We also recommend that you book baggage, personal liability and cancellation cover.

• Peace of mind – STA Travel is an Appointed Representative of Towergate Underwriting Group Limited and is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

Note: You must provide us with details of your travel insurance before you leave as you will not be permitted to participate on your placement, trip or tour if you do not have adequate cover. It is also advisable to book your cover as early as possible to make sure you are insured for cancellation of your trip due to illness, serious accident or any other insurable reason.

Why is insurance not included?
Each of our traveller’s plans are different, and while STA Travel can provide adequate cover for the vast majority of our travellers, there may be some activities or destinations that cannot be covered by STA Travel. It is therefore important to give you the freedom to choose the insurance that covers your plans and that you feel comfortable with. It also saves us from having to pass on extra admin costs to you.

Visas
Different destination countries have different visa requirements depending on things such as your length of stay and your reasons for entering the country, and whether you will be gaining paid work during your time in the country. Sporting Opportunities will supply your with any advice you need with regards to the visas you require for your chosen destination, and we will make information available to you to assist with your application.

It is important that you check your visa requirements well in advance of your travel date, as with many tourist and working holiday visas you will need to submit an application to the relevant consulate, embassy or high commission before your travel date. In some cases entry to your destination country will be granted at immigration on arrival without having to apply for a visa before the departure date for your travels.

With all visa applications it is important that you have sufficient space available in your passport for the relevant visas required for your travels, and that your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned date of return.

Vaccinations
At least 6 – 8 weeks before your chosen travel date you should visit your local GP or Nomad Travel Clinic to discuss your vaccination and medication requirements. Your medical professional will be able to advise you of any recommended and required vaccinations for your chosen destination(s).You should inform your doctor of all of your destination countries, and what activities you plan on doing, and in which regions you plan to stay while you are there, as different regions and activities have different health risks in some countries.

Some destination countries will require you to produce a certificate of vaccination in order to enter the country, so be sure that you understand any vaccination requirements for your chosen destination, so that you do not have any issues when passing through customs.

Above all you should make sure you are well prepared for your travels, so that you have the best experience possible whilst overseas!

Orientation
Our in-country team will give you a warm welcome at the overseas airport before taking you to your accommodation. You will then receive an orientation to help you settle into the country and prepare you for your sports tour abroad with us.

"The sports tour that Sporting Opportunities arranged for us was perfect. South Africa was a great country and having the mix of playing against locals as well as coaching sport to kids in the townships was a nice balance. Doing two weeks in South Africa has made a number of us want to come back for a longer stint on one of your 5 week volunteer coaching projects so look out for us. Thanks to all involved".

Dan Long: Football Captain

"Taking the girls on this two week hockey tour was excellent. It was the first time that any of us had been to South Africa and the team made us feel extremely welcome and comfortable. You pack so much into such a short period which totally tired us out but apart from being great fun will be a fond memory for years to come. We'll certainly be looking at coming away with you again".

Sarah Jackson: PE Teacher

"A well organised trip with a difference. Combining playing and coaching as well as all the cultural things you put on for us was a great idea. To even get to a Springboks Rugby game was a special treat for the lads on this tour so thanks for going the extra mile to make this happen for us".
