Coaching Futsal in Lovina: Inside Bali’s North-Coast Sports Academy

Coaching Futsal in Lovina: Inside Bali’s North-Coast Sports Academy

Most people picture Bali as surf breaks in the south and rice terraces around Ubud. Up on the island’s quieter north coast, in Lovina, something else happens every school day: a court full of local kids working through drills with coaches who take the game seriously. This is where our Sports Coaching in the Community project in Bali is based. September’s report from the ground shows why coaching here is about much more than running a session plan.

September on court: futsal with a thinking head

This month’s coaching block centred on futsal, the small-sided game that demands quick feet and quicker decisions. Each session took around 50 boys through the core technical work of passing, shooting and dribbling. Coaches then layered on positional training across all four futsal roles: pivot, flank, anchor and goalkeeper.

The tactical side got equal attention. Players worked on shape, transitions between attack and defence, and talking to each other on court. The coaching message running through it all was simple: slow down, read the play, and think before the next touch. For young players who naturally want to sprint at everything, learning control and patience is the step that turns enthusiasm into game sense.

With roughly four hours of coaching built around the local school timetable each day, players get real volume. That means time to repeat skills, make mistakes, fix them and grow in confidence as a squad.

Results that matter

Training means more when there’s something to play for. In September, some of the academy’s players finished third in a tournament featuring teams from across Bali, a strong result for a north-coast programme up against island-wide opposition.

Kit was also boosted, with donated socks and futsal shoes going to players who needed them. It’s a small detail, but proper footwear on a hard court changes what a player can do.

What this means for you as a coach

Joining the Lovina academy puts you straight into a working coaching environment:

  • Real sessions, real squads. You’ll coach mixed ages and abilities, adapting drills on the fly, which is the kind of experience that strengthens a coaching CV, a sports degree application or a UCAS personal statement.
  • Football, futsal and basketball. The academy runs more than one sport, so you can coach your specialism and broaden your range.
  • Technical and tactical coaching. Positional play, decision-making and communication, not just cones and shuttle runs.
  • A competitive pathway. Helping players prepare for tournaments gives your coaching a clear purpose and measurable outcomes.
  • Local coaches alongside you. You’ll learn how the game is taught and played in Indonesia while sharing what you bring from home.

Why Lovina?

Lovina is Bali at a different pace. Strung along the north coast in the Buleleng region, it swaps the crowds and nightlife of the south for black volcanic-sand beaches, calm water and a proper local feel. It’s a place where you’ll live alongside the community you coach, not in a tourist bubble.

Away from the court, there’s plenty to fill your downtime:

  • Sunrise dolphin trips. Lovina’s signature experience: heading out on a traditional boat at first light to watch dolphins in the Bali Sea.
  • Snorkelling and diving. Menjangan Island in West Bali National Park, a short drive west, has some of the clearest water and healthiest reefs on the island.
  • Waterfalls and hot springs. Gitgit waterfall and the Banjar hot springs are easy trips inland, and perfect after a hard week of sessions.
  • Temples and highlands. Visit the Brahmavihara-Arama monastery in the hills above town, or head up to the cool air of Munduk and the lakeside Ulun Danu Beratan temple.
  • Sunsets and street food. Evenings are made for watching the sun drop over the sea with fresh grilled fish from a beachside warung.

Lovina is also an affordable base, and the rest of Bali is within weekend reach. Ubud, the southern surf beaches and the Nusa islands are all there when you want them, and you’ll always come back to the north coast’s slower rhythm.
