BSc Hons Applied Sport Science

Postgraduate Sports Courses at the University of Edinburgh

MSc/PgDip Dance Science and Education
It is becoming critically important to the holistic nature and global development of all dance performances and training that there are professionals with a scientific foundation for the teaching of dance as an art form, who are appropriately resourced, challenged and inspired to take on their own frontiers and develop new ones. On this programme, gain a foundation in science to underpin all forms of dance training and educate the development of dance as an art form. With careful development, this programme focuses on the science directly relevant to the processes and practices that optimise: dance training, dance education and dance performance.

MScR Education and Sport
The MSc by Research aims to provide thorough training in research in a particular area within either Education or Sport. It is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) degree.

MSc/PgDip Performance Psychology
Examine how psychology can contribute to maintaining and enhancing high-level performance. Drawing extensively from research and practice in sports psychology this programme examines how psychology can contribute to maintaining and enhancing high-level performance across a variety of domains such as sport, military, emergency services, forensics, medicine, business and performing arts.

MSc/PgDip/PgCert Physical Activity for Health
This graduate programme is designed to tackle the physical inactivity pandemic, enhancing knowledge and understanding of the global issues pertinent to physical activity for health. Insufficient physical activity is the fourth leading risk factor for premature mortality. It has recently been recognised as a pandemic and is a global public health issue. The MSc Physical Activity for Health is designed to provide academic training at a postgraduate level for both recent graduates from a range of disciplines (including sport and exercise sciences, health sciences, psychology, epidemiology, and physiology) and the existing national and international workforce in the area of physical activity and public health.

MSc Sport Policy, Management and International Development
This innovative MSc in Sport Policy, Management and International Development provides a critical understanding of the key concepts necessary for employment and advancement across all sports sectors. The increasing social, economic and political role of sport is a key feature of life in the 21st century. The MSc in Sport Policy, Management and International Development provides a critical understanding of key concepts necessary for employment and critical engagement across all sports sectors.

PhD Sport, Physical Education and Health Sciences
A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) takes three years full-time or six years part-time. The first full-time year of the PhD degree is probationary and progress to year two is subject to satisfactory progress and passing the first-year progression board.

MSc/PgDip Strength and Conditioning
The primary focus of this programme is sporting performance. However, the application of strength and conditioning principles to diverse areas including pre- and rehabilitation, youth and ageing populations, and other specific and clinical populations is becoming more commonplace. By joining this degree, you will have the opportunity to study the application of these principles in your core and option courses, and see them used in a practical setting through a voluntary internship or placement.

The University of Edinburgh is one of the top sports universities in the country, with an incredible host of alumni who have made their names in the sporting world:

Dr Polly Swann – British rower and a member of the Great Britain Rowing Team. She is a former World and European champion in the women’s coxless pairs, having won the 2013 World Rowing Championships at Chungju in Korea, and the 2014 European Rowing Championships at Belgrade, Serbia with her partner Helen Glover. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won a silver medal in the women’s eighth.

Sir Chris Hoy MBE  – former track cyclist and Racing driver from Scotland who represented Great Britain at the Olympic and World Championships and Scotland at the Commonwealth Games. Hoy is eleven times a world champion and six times an Olympic champion. With a total of seven Olympic medals, six gold and one silver, Hoy is the second most decorated Olympic cyclist of all time.

Dame Katherine Jane Grainger DBE – British former rower and current Chair of UK Sport. She is a 2012 Summer Olympics gold medallist, four-time Olympic silver medallist and six-time World Champion. She served as Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University between 2015 and 2020 and is currently Chancellor of the University of Glasgow.
